Food waste and recycling

A third of waste thrown away in rubbish bins is food waste. Whilst more people are starting to recycle food waste (and put it in their food recycling bin) there is still 28,000 tonnes of food waste that ends up in our rubbish bins every week.

The cost to taxpayers

Food waste being put in normal rubbish bins costs £600,000 in disposal costs. By recycling this food waste instead, it can help to save this money - so that it can be spent on other essential services.

Recycling food waste creates green energy

When food is recycled (by using separate food bins from general waste), it is transformed into energy and fertiliser.

Just 1 Anaerobic Digestion facility in Buckinghamshire can produce enough energy to power 12,000 homes.

Recycling as little as 6 tea bags will generate enough energy to boil a kettle to make another cuppa!

Weekly food collections

Buckinghamshire has a weekly recycling service for food waste.

This is twice as often as general rubbish collections, making it easier to keep your rubbish smelling nice (or not so stinky at least!).

You can line your food waste bin with different types of bags or containers.
