From Pet Tech to Fast Tech: Why Our Gadgets Deserve a Second Life

Ellie Powell, 09 October 2026 - Recycling

Many old electrical items end up forgotten in drawers, cupboards and garages. Others are thrown away altogether. And they all contain valuable materials such as copper, gold and lithium that can be recovered and used again. So lets recycle them!

Let's be honest, most of us love a new gadget.

Whether it's the latest wireless earbuds, a fitness tracker, a smart speaker or a clever new device for our pets, technology has found its way into almost every corner of our lives. It makes things easier, more convenient and, let's face it, quite fun too.

One of the newest tech trends is Pet Tech. From pet cameras and automatic feeders to GPS trackers and interactive toys, technology is helping us keep our furry friends happy and healthy. In fact, UK pet owners bought nearly 67 million pet gadgets in the past year alone. We're even spending millions of hours every week checking in on our pets while we're away from home.

But there's another side to our love of technology that we don't always think about: what happens to all those gadgets when we replace them?

The good news? Electricals can be recycled!

If it has a plug, battery or cable, it can often be repaired, passed on, donated or recycled. Giving electrical items a second life helps save valuable resources, reduces the need for new raw materials and prevents batteries from ending up in household waste, where they can cause fires.

So, before you rush out to buy the next upgrade, take a moment to think about the device you're replacing. Could someone else use it? Could it be donated? Could it be recycled properly?

Small actions make a big difference. By reusing, repairing and recycling our unwanted gadgets, we can continue enjoying the benefits of technology without creating unnecessary waste.

Remember. If it has a plug, battery or cable, don't bin it. Reuse it, donate it or recycle it.

Getting rid of unwanted electricals responsibly is easier than you might think.

You can take batteries and unwanted electrical items to your nearest Household Recycling Centre, where they'll be recycled safely and responsibly.

Got a smaller item such as an electric toothbrush, iron or hairdryer? There's no need to make a special trip. Simply place it on top of your bin lid on your recycling collection week and the crew will collect it for recycling.

If you're recycling batteries, pop them into a clear plastic bag and leave them on top of your bin lid so they can be collected safely.

After all, technology moves fast, but that doesn't mean our gadgets should be used once and forgotten. A little thought about what happens next can help give them a valuable second life.
